I am happy that we have snow this year in Wayne and Pike County. A winter in Northeast PA without
snow is like a summer without sunshine, pizza without pepperoni, and Coca Cola without fizz.
Okay, that may be an exaggeration, but I can’t help it. Winter can be dreary and depressing, and the white powder from heaven transforms bare tree branches from cold, stiff, bony appendages to glittery arms of fluffy beauty. Streams of water flowing through a crystalline woodland take on a magical quality that is missing when only dead, brown leaves decorate the landscape.
Skiing is more fun at Ski Big Bear – it is easier to get “in the mood” when the surrounding area is a winter wonderland. Not to mention the availability of snowshoeing through the thousands of acres of state forest (Promised Land State Park has a number of snowshoes to loan out FREE of charge! Check it out here!)
When looking at homes for sale in Northeast PA in the winter, please come to the Poconos prepared. While some homeowners are diligent about making sure their driveways are plowed and a walkway is cleared to the home, many homes are not as easily accessible during the winter months. Things to keep in mind:
- Wear winter boots. You may wish to bring an extra pair of socks for your ride home, in case your feet get wet! (I usually have a shovel and rock salt with me).
- Dress warmly. Many of the homes will be “winterized” and thus, unheated. If looking at homes on Lake Wallenpaupack, there may be an icy wind blowing across the water.
- Use the restroom before heading out to see homes. As before: many homes are “winterized” and the water is shut off, making bathrooms off limits. PLEASE do not use a homeowner’s bathroom without permission!
- Bring snacks & something to drink. We may spend considerable time in a location that is not near a convenience store or fast food joint, making it difficult to “grab a bite” on the run!
If skiing is your thing, you may wish to look at homes for sale in Masthope. Homeowners in the Masthope community enjoy season lift tickets at Ski-Big Bear along with many other amenities unique to Masthope (horseback riding, Delaware River access, cross country skiing, atv trails, powerboat Lake Westcolang, outdoor pool for the summer, and more…)
There are many other options for owning a vacation home here in Northeast PA. Several homeowner communities offer amenities for year round use. Winter is definitely more quiet and low-key than the summer time, but it is still a great time for nature lovers.
